W04 Essay Perceive the Elements of a Film (Aristotle's elements)
Plot: What can you say about the plot in this little excerpt?
A lonely man who probably
didn’t have friends living in a castle protected by a camera and surrounded by
fences with a sign “No Trespassing.” Before his sudden death, he
whispered a name or word “Rosebud” then dropped the snow globe that rolled down the
steps. Then comes a lady to fix his body on the bed and cover him.
.
Character: Describe what you know of the main character.
The main knowledge I have about
this man is that he was an unhappy wealthy citizen of Kane. Unhappiness and
regrets of being alone probably caused his sudden death.
Thought:
What thoughts is the filmmaker trying to convey?
My personal assumption as
based on this clip is to avoid the life of isolation which brings depression
and sudden life. In short, no matter how much richer a person can be, isolation
is not a good option.
Diction:
There is only one-word spoken-how would you describe the diction of that word?
The only spoken word “Rosebud”
can really tell that something was bordering him. The diction of this word is much more important to him than us because it was his last word. The word has
some mystery beyond our comprehension.
Music: What does the music sound like, and how is it used?
It starts with a radio noise that
sounds like a call to listeners/viewers to pay attention. As the music
continues with a bit of the sound of radio without a word, a train sound is
followed by a sad and a moment of reverence sound while watching the castle
and the dead man. Because of the dissonant tone, the music brings tension to
keep the viewers awake while watching.
Spectacle: What techniques of spectacle, or cinematography, are used?
To add to the feelings of this
story, the camera is filmed from a close-up angle to capture the details by
offering a visualization of the fence perimeter from the bottom up adding more feelings
of mystery.
