W02 Assignment: Observe Music and Architecture

As a large ensemble of instruments with bowed strings, the orchestra on this video had played by “Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake”. In an audio version, a listener will perceive that there is more than one instrument playing throughout the songs and more than one melody line is played concurrently. In this performance, the most leading instruments are woodwind instruments such as the bassoon (00:02), oboe (00:03), and flute (00:12); string instruments such as violin (00:19) and louder sound of a bass (00:40) can also be heard.

The music sounds irregular, going through different pitches. This happens by not the woodwind instruments alone but by the combination of the various instruments which affects me as a listener into feeling playful and light. While these instruments provide a very pleasant, light, and overall joyous music leading to meditation, this beautiful piece of music is mainly consonant; it fluctuates smoothly and has some neat characteristics.

The music uses the 4 beats in a bar and time signature 4/4 until the end of this music. The rhythm played between 00:02-00:20 and 0:56-1:15 are more or less identical with a fast and constant tempo. One of the good techniques used was the implementation of the constant pitch and a bit of Crescendo which contributed significantly to the tune and greatly affects the mood of the whole building piece thus the fast pace makes the listener feel a bit jumpy.

The prominent melody which is bouncy and playful can be heard from the start and close to the end of the song with a texture layered as we could hear more than one pitch simultaneously. This music is primarily homophonic – a single melody with a harmonic accompaniment from other instruments.

I can conclude that this music is mainly soft and constant but there are very few parts only where it varies between dynamics especially at the end where crescendo and decrescendo were used (01:15). As a liquid architecture, this piece of music can be expressed as the Bosjes Chapel – set within a vineyard and pomegranate orchard situated at the foot of the Waaihoek Mountain in South Africa.

This architecture demonstrates a superior beauty with the middle of a valley surrounded by a reflective pool that emphasizes the floating nature of the chapel and gives an impression of weightlessness. One word comes to mind when visiting this place: Peace!
