W04 Reflection – Design Thinking

1.            Summary of the main ideas and topics of the week.

This week's main idea was the use of one of the best tools for seeking solutions which are Design Thinking. Through this method, the focus is on the people we are creating the solution for and the method itself assists innovator in finding the best sustainable solutions by observing three phases: inspiration, ideation, and implementation.

Basically, Design Thinking consists of 4 key elements:

·         Define the problem – Example: Questioning like of a small child, “Why?” “Why?” “Why?” Until finally the simple answers are behind you and the true issues are revealed.

·         Create and consider many options – Brainstorm as many solutions as possible for consideration

·         Refine selected directions – Options will need to be combined and smaller ideas integrated into the selected schemes that make it through

·         Pick a winner, execute – At this stage, the problem is solved or the opportunity s fully uncovered.

Design thinking takes two modes of action, it's either can be Empathize mode which is the foundation of a human-centered design process (starts with people and ends with innovating solution) or Define mode that unpacks and synthesize your empathy findings into compelling needs.

2.            A response to a specific reading, video, or activity. For instance, did something spark interest, surprise, anger, inspire, or confuse you? Reference the specific reading, video, or activity. Add your thoughts, and explain your reaction.

How to Build Your Creative Confidence by professor Ted was a brilliant presentation. In short, he wants us to embrace our fear by the example of touching a stake. Fear of what the world will say (especially the naysayers) shouldn’t be the reason we put on hold our plans. In the talk, he mentions Albert Bandura is listed as the 4th most important psychology in History.  At 87 when Bandura was still working at Stanford, he developed a methodology that has helped people against phobias. The methodology process was compiled in what he calls “The Guided Mastery” that will help solve the problem and build people’s confidence. As he explained, when people’s confidence grows, that’s when they start working in new directions, become freer to express their innovative ideas, and become pioneers of generations.

3.    Respond to the W04 prompt:

o    Why is design thinking an important skill in social innovation?

Design Thinking is all about creating solutions to problems by taking away barriers to social development prosperity. We are surrender by issues in our communities and therefore we need to come up with ideas in fixing the negative situations. Because of one person’s properly oriented idea, thousands of people can be saved, and the thousands can help millions then billions, and that’s how we can change the world. So many issues could be improved by giving other people tools and helping them understand how to use the tools.  It takes creative thinking to understand the actual root of some problems and really dive into the issue. The empathy we have, combined with the hunger to see change will reveal our real comfortable skills needed to change situations from worse to better.
