Essay - Wikis
FamilySearch
Research Wiki and RootsWeb Wiki are user-contributed and online genealogy
resources with distinct features that offer information and resources for
genealogical research. Both sites use online forums, mailing lists, and other
resources to help users research their family history. Although both Wikis may
have multiple similarities, they differ in some functionalities. The
FamilySearch Research Wiki for example, users can search using basic, advanced,
or namespaces list options, with advanced options for images, help articles,
categories, discussion pages, users, or policies. The wiki also includes a link
to an article about genealogical research methodologies for the Bahamas. On the
other side, RootsWeb Wiki acts like a digital version of The Redbook and The Source
and features basic and advanced search options. I will recommend the
FamilySearch Research Wiki because it offers several advantages over the
RootsWeb Wiki for genealogical research. It provides comprehensive resources, a
user-friendly interface using MediaWiki, and is integrated with FamilySearch's
other resources, such as the FamilyTree database, historical records, and
digitized family history books. The Wiki offers information and a synopsis of
the best resources for genealogy researchers, making it a valuable resource for
genealogists.
Using
the FamilySearch Research Wiki, I found a link that
helped me find more people who share the same surname as me. This gave me an
option to explore more ancestor information to find those closer to me.
Genealogy
Wikis provide us with a handbook of reference information and articles for
genealogists and help us find, use, and interpret ancestors' records. They also
offer articles for beginners like us and provide a family tree chart.
