Real Solutions for Real People

One of the social entrepreneurs’ goals is to create real solutions for real people. This implies designing and implementing solutions that are realistic about human behavior. Harley Henriques do Nacimento founder of Gopa-Bahia designed a different approach to deal with human behavior regarding the awareness of HIV/AIDS. Teaching people about their bodies and living conditions then training them on HIV/AIDS was more effective than straight teaching them about the virus. Therefore, you cannot make any social changes without actual plans and support to get clients to actually use your products.

This approach is the best as it creates a common ground (understand) between the organization and the clients. When a solution takes the audience into account and considers their actual behavior as opposed to idealized behavior then the likelihood of success is much greater. Another example refers to Ravi Agarwal founder of Toxics Link to provide an effective solution in India to manage toxic waste such as discarded needles. Instead of using oil-fired incinerators which were both toxic and possibly harmful to the surrounding community, Agarwal proposed a more comprehensive solution of disinfecting on-site using a hypochlorite solution which was safe and cheap.

It is a pity that years later, our governments are still falling into the same trap. The management of COVI-19 is an example. Officials jumped in informing the community about how dangerous the coronavirus is without emphasizing what human behavior should be toward this pandemic. Officials should have taught people self-confidence, how to stay healthy, and living conditions then they would feel like they had something to protect from COVID-19.
