W03 Reflection - Addressing Big Problems & Root Cause Analysis
1. Summary of the main ideas and topics of the week.
Excellent topics were discussed this week.
WICKED PROBLEM
A wicked problem is a social or cultural problem that is difficult or impossible to solve because of the following four reasons:
Incomplete or contradictory knowledge,
The number of people and opinions involved,
The large economic burden, and
The interconnected nature of these problems with other problems. For example, poverty is linked with education, nutrition with poverty, the economy with nutrition, and so on.
These complicated social issues have several characteristics such as they are unique, have no definitive formulation, difficult to claim success…
Among the social issues, poverty is the centerpiece to break before emancipating or controlling the others.
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS (RCA)
Which is a helpful tool to answer the question of why the problem occurred in the first place. For that we might ask the following questions:
What happened?
Why it happened?
How to reduce its likelihood to happen again.
The problem might be caused by the following type: physical (tangible), human (people), or organization (process).
One other beneficial topic was the “The 5 Why’s”. Ask “why” until you get to the root of the problem.
CAUSE & EFFECT ANALYSIS (CEA)
Which was devised by Professor Kaoru Ishikawa in the 1960s is a method used to discover the root cause of a problem, uncover bottlenecks in the process, and identify where and why the process isn’t working.
The CEA is done in the form of a diagram called “Fishbone” or “Ishikawa”. This is done by identifying the problem, work out the major factors involved, identify the possible cause, and analyze the diagram.
2. A response to a specific reading, video, or activity. For instance, did something spark interest, surprise, anger, inspire, or confuse you? Reference the specific reading, video, or activity. Add your thoughts, and explain your reaction.
My weekly studies, made me realize that most learners can read, but many lack the literacy skills needed to succeed in their studies. This is probably because this “lack of education” as a social issue is ignored or “offloaded” by policymakers. I find it difficult to ignore that these issues are the very same problems that are confronting us from every angle and lead to poverty. Every corner of the world is facing this issue including our own families.
An article written by Sylvias entitles Education can change the world mentioned that “Education is the key to change the world. It reduces poverty, decreases racism, eliminates gender inequality, prevents needless deaths, and most importantly fosters peace.”
Through education, a person will not only receive high knowledge but will be equipped with the tools necessary to shape the world around him. With education, we have the responsibility to help our community solve its own problems. We need to make a difference and not be a doom prophet.
Through education, our weakness will be turned into a strength. And we will be more confident to stand for our own opinions.
As the old Chinese saying goes: Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.
3. Respond to the W03 prompt: What are you most looking forward to in regard to your social issue?
This week’s lesson triggered my mind in understanding that life is not about me and my family alone. I have a role to play in the development of my community. Each place I walk, my mind is all over finding a solution to the problems. I have opted to make volunteerism a valuable act to my community. Educating people around by sharing my skills with them and helping in developing my surrounding can attenuate the impacts of poverty due to lack of education.
Today statistics show that almost one billion people in the world live in extreme poverty (living on less than $1.90 a day). To change these stats, I have to stand up impact the life of my community with computer class for teenagers that I have started and focus on implementing my farming project. I believe with such a mind, I will be able to impact a few, which in return they will also impact a few until thousands are reached.
